When market psychology goes to extremes, Olstein reacts by paying attention to his values, which can result in our selling stocks that exceed his updated private market values (based on excess cash flow) and buying stocks when prices fall materially from his updated calculation of intrinsic value. Although, Olstein does not react to future market prognostication, Olstein always measures aggregate valuations of the stock market to determine whether or not extremes exist, in order to set price strategies when accumulating or selling stocks in his portfolio.
