Picking companies to bet on to weather the growing financial crisis in the United States, noted value investor Whitney Tilson appeared on CNBC last week and named just three: McDonald's, Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway, and Canadian financial services conglomerate Fairfax Financial Holdings.
There was one reason Fairfax, a holding company with subsidiaries in the property and casualty and re-insurance business, landed in the company of the "recession-proof" fast-food restaurant and the seemingly unstoppable value investment vehicle run by the Oracle from Omaha Mr. Buffet: Credit Default Swaps.
